The 10 Best Shillong Waterfalls to Explore In & Around Town

Are you looking for the best waterfalls in Shillong? Here are 10 beautiful falls worth visiting in and around Shillong.

Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, which is known as the abode of the clouds. This nickname comes from the abundant rainfall, and it’s the direct translation of the Sanskirt word Meghalaya – “megha” means clouds and “alaya” means abode. The combination of rain and sunshine creates some epic landscapes to explore, especially waterfalls.

Shillong Waterfalls to Explore

Here are six waterfalls in Shillong to consider visiting. If you’re staying in Shillong for a few days, there’s more things to do and natural beauty to explore beyond waterfalls.

Elephant Falls

Elephant Falls is the most popular waterfall to visit in Shillong because it is right in town so need to travel outside of the city to enjoy this three tiered waterfall. It’s also not a trek to get to the viewing point of the falls, making it one of the most accessible waterfalls in Meghalaya.

The British called it Elephant Falls due to a nearby rock that was shaped like an elephant, but that rock has since been destroyed in an earthquake.

Sweet Falls

A steep and majestic waterfall that you can see from a viewpoint above. Be sure to stay within the railings from the platforms at the viewpoint. The trek down to the falls is steep and treacherous; today it is prohibited to hike down to the pool.

Bishop and Beadon Falls

Sometimes known as the twin brother falls, these waterfalls cascade gracefully down the rocky cliffs. Easily accessible from the main town, the falls provide a refreshing escape for both locals and travelers seeking respite from the urban hustle. The roar of the falls creates a serene ambiance that contrasts with the busy city.

Crinoline Falls

Found near Lady Hydari Park in Shillong, Crinoline Falls is another nice waterfall that adds to the natural charm of the region. The falls are easily accessible and can be enjoyed with a leisurely stroll. While not as grand as some others, its simplicity and the peaceful surroundings make it a delightful stop for a moment of serenity.

This waterfall is also sometimes referred to as Blue Heaven Falls.

Spread Eagle Falls

Note: This waterfall is a bit of difficult hike to get to and sometimes there is not enough flowing water to create the falls so it might not always be worth a visit.

Spread Eagle Falls derive its name from the shape of the water stream as it fans out, resembling an eagle in flight. Unlike some of the more popular waterfalls, it is harder to get to and lesser known. The locals sometimes call it SE Falls.

Waterfalls worth exploring outside of Shillong

Roads around Shillong are often under construction so small distances can take a while to travel. For the waterfalls outside of Shillong I have included four waterfalls worth visiting for a day trip from Shillong. This means the driving time to get to them from Shillong is 3 hours or under.

If you’re traveling outside of Shillong there’s many beautiful tourist places to visit around Meghalaya.

Wei Saw Dong Falls

Wei Saw Dong Falls is one my personal favorite waterfalls I’ve seen anywhere in the world. It’s in a cool curved rocky backdrop that makes you feel like you’re in another world.

Unlike the more well-known waterfalls in the region, Wei Saw Dong Falls offers a more intimate experience. The falls are nestled in the Mawsmai village near Cherrapunjee, adding an element of adventure to the journey. A short but difficult trek through the lush forests leads to this hidden gem, rewarding hikers with an amazing cascade of water that finds its way down the rocks into a turquoise pool.

You have to traverse bamboo ladders and climb up and down rocks as you get further into the about 30 minute hike to the falls. If you are not up for a physical challenge, then I would recommend skipping this waterfall.

Dainthlen Falls

Named after a legendary serpent, this waterfall adds a touch of mystique to its already captivating charm. As the cascading waters descend amidst a backdrop of lush foliage, the falls create a sense of tranquility that soothes the soul. Located near Cherrapunjee, the journey to Dainthlen Falls treats travelers to panoramic views of the Meghalayan landscape.

Krang Suri

Venture a little off the beaten path in Meghalaya, and you’ll uncover the hidden treasure of Krang Suri. This ethereal waterfall presents an enchanting spectacle as the crystal-clear waters cascade down into a mesmerizing turquoise pool. The vivid contrast between the lush greenery and the vivid blue of the water creates a scene straight out of a dream. Located near the village of Amlarem, the journey to Krang Suri takes you through picturesque landscapes, offering a taste of the region’s rustic charm.

Nohkalikai Falls

Nohkalikai Falls reigns as one of Meghalaya’s most iconic landmarks. Plunging from a staggering height of around 1,100 feet, the falls are a majestic sight against the backdrop of the dramatic Meghalayan cliffs. It is India’s tallest plunging waterfall.

The sheer force of the water and the roar of its descent create an atmosphere of awe. Located near Cherrapunjee, this waterfall is not just a visual marvel; it also weaves a tale of heartbreak and legend. The name “Nohkalikai” translates to “Jump of Ka Likai,” referencing a local woman whose tragic story is interwoven with the falls.
