21 Best One-Day Trips Near Mumbai

Are you looking for one-day trips near Mumbai? I’ve got you covered!

Whether you’re a local looking for a quick escape or a visitor seeking to explore beyond the city, these day trips offer a refreshing change from Mumbai’s fast-paced life.

When I lived in Mumbai for a year I often felt like hopping in the car and getting out of the chaos for a day trip or a weekend trip. Here are some of my top recommendations for places to see and fun things to do in one day near Mumbai.

Best One-Day Trips Near Mumbai

Here’s a guide to the best one-day trips near Mumbai.

1. Elephanta Caves

Located on Elephanta Island, these UNESCO World Heritage Site caves are known for their magnificent rock-cut sculptures dedicated to Lord Shiva. A ferry ride from the Gateway of India will take you there, combining a scenic journey with a historical exploration.

The public ferry takes about an hour to make the trip to the island. Then you walk up to the caves. You can take the ferry yourself and then hire a local guide on the island to explain the caves to you. I do recommend getting a guide for exploring the cave because otherwise you miss out on interesting history.

If you want a more peaceful journey than the public ferry you can also hire a private boat to take you to the island in half the time. A motorboat can reach the island in 30 minutes as opposed to the hour long ferry ride. That is what I did and was well worth the extra cost.

2. Sanjay Gandhi National Park – Kanheri Caves

This national park offers a quick escape into nature. It’s home to the ancient Kanheri Caves, wilderness, and hiking trails. It’s an ideal spot for those looking for adventure within the tranquility of nature.

From the entrance of the park you’ll need to take a bus to get to the caves which are a ways into the park. Then you’ll need to walk up a short up steep distance to explore the different caves.

If you don’t want the hassle of navigating the park on your own and taking the public bus, you can hire a private guide.

3. Khandala & Lonavala

The newly opened Mumbai Trans Harbor Link (MTHL) or Atla Setu makes this one-day trip super easy today!

These twin hill stations are famous for their lush greenery, waterfalls, and caves, especially during the monsoon season. They offer a refreshing break with many trekking spots and viewpoints.

While you’re in town be sure to get some fudge at Cooper’s Fudge. My personal favorite flavor is the Chocolate Walnut! Another popular treat to snack on in Lonavala is chikki, it’s a sweet brittle candy make of sugar and nuts (what may be referred to as a type of “bark” in the US). Stop for a vada pav or some pav bhaji at Kamat’s.

If you don’t have your own means of transportation, you can book a guided tour that takes you to visit the Karla Caves, the Bhaja Caves, Bhusi Dam and Lion’s Point.
