Slovenia Itinerary: 7 Days, 10 Days, 2 Weeks Trip Planning 2025

Looking for the perfect Slovenia itinerary? Here are detailed options for 7 days, 10 days, and 2 week Slovenia itineraries.

Slovenia truly does have it all – from the mountains to the coast, charming towns to rugged nature, delicious food to local wine.

I had my wedding in Slovenia in May 2024 and my husband and I invited 70 guests from around the world (US, India, England, France, Singapore, and more) who had never been to Slovenia. Before the wedding, everyone kept asking why we were getting married there. After they made the trip everyone said how much they loved Lake Bled, and traveling around Slovenia after the wedding, and how they couldn’t wait to come back to see more of the beautiful country.

Highlights of Slovenia include the gorgeous lake town of Bled, the natural beauty of Soca Valley and Logar Valley, the seaside town of Piran, and the capital city of Ljubljana. Below I breakdown some detailed itinerary options for the ultimate trip to Slovenia!

How many days is enough to visit Slovenia?

I recommend a week to see the highlights of Slovenia. If you don’t have 7 days, you can base yourself in Lake Bled for a few days and get a taste of Slovenia in the charming lake town and nearby nature sights worth visiting (such as Vintgar Gorge and Lake Bohinj). At a minimum, I’d say have 4 days for your Slovenia itinerary, but you can easily spend 2 weeks without having seen it all.

Slovenia Itinerary: 7 Days

This 7 day itinerary is the ultimate week in Slovenia, across three stunning locations: Lake Bled, Soca Valley, and Ljubljana.

7 Day Itinerary Overview:

Day 1-3: Stay in Lake Bled for 3 nights & explore Bled, Lake Bohinj, Triglav National Park
Day 4-5: Stay in Bovec for 2 nights and explore Soca Valley
Day 6-7: Visit Ljubljana and depart from LJU

Day 1: Land at LJU & Lake Bled

I recommend going straight to Lake Bled from the airport. The airport is located about halfway between Bled and Ljubljana so you’re just as close to Bled as the capital city. Alternatively, you could go into the city of Ljubljana first thing but I would save your city plans for the end of the trip.

🔹Pick up your rental car at the airport and drive the ~30-40 minutes to your accommodation in Lake Bled.

🔹Grab dinner at Spica and go for a stroll along the lake. If you have time, you can do the whole circumference of the lake (about 1.5 hours).

Where To Stay In Lake Bled

📍Bled Rose Hotel: This is the priciest of the options I recommend in the area. It’s the newest, most updated hotel in the town. The standard rooms are a bit on the small side, but they are very nice. If it’s in your budget, I’d recommend booking a superior

📍Hotel Triglav: Historic hotel on the quiet end of the lake.

📍Garni Hotel Savica: Centrally located mid-range hotel on the less expensive side for Bled (which can get quite pricey, especially during the summer months).

You can also check out places to go glamping in Lake Bled and around Slovenia. Glamping delivers on the beauty of nature without compromising on comfort.

Day 2: Lake Bled

There’s no shortage of things to do in Lake Bled so it’s hard to narrow down what to do in one day, but my top recommendations include:

🔹Start the day with a walk or hike. You have 3 options here:

  • Go for the leisurely flat walk around the circumference of Lake Bled, which takes about 1.5 hours.
  • Try the more challenging hike to Mala Osojnica for a stunning view of Lake Bled. It’s a short hike but it gets a bit steep so you may need to stop to catch your breath. Plan about 30 minutes each way (up and down).
  • Walk through Vintgar Gorge (it’s ticketed with specific entry times), which will take about 3 hours in total including driving over and taking the bus to the entrance, walking the the whole gorge and returning to town.

🔹Enjoy lunch in town or overlooking the lake at Vila Preseren.

🔹In the afternoon, take a Pletna boat across the lake to Bled Island.

🔹End the evening with dinner at Old Cellar or Oštarija Peglez’n.

Day 3: Lake Bohinj & Triglav National Park

🔹Drive to neighboring town Bohinj, a small town center situated next to a beautiful Alpine lake.

🔹Take a hike uphill to Slap Savica (about 45 minutes with lots of stairs). You’ll need to pay to park plus a small entrance fee for the hike. It’s technically part of Triglav National Park. FYI- “slap” means “waterfall,” so anywhere you see a sign for “slap” be sure to check it out.

🔹Grab lunch at restaurant in town. There’s a handful of restaurants, cafes, and hotels right in Bohinj town, which is on the southeast corner of the lake. I grabbed coffee at Snack bar – Pod Brezo and its a pleasant spot to refuel with a view.

🔹Go for a panoramic boat ride across Lake Bohinj.

🔹Other activities you can do at Lake Bohinj include:

  • Stand-up paddle board
  • Rent a kayak or canoe
  • Swimming is allowed at Lake Bohinj and there’s a few areas along the shoreline where people layout and go for dips in the cool water.

🔹Drive back to Lake Bled for the late afternoon and evening

🔹Visit Bled Castle (open 8am-8pm daily) for beautiful views of the lake where you snap sunset photos.

  • For an even more special evening, make a dinner reservation at the Castle Restaurant, which has a delicious tasting menu.
  • If you go to the castle between 10am and 6pm they also have a cafe where you can enjoy a coffee and a slice of the famous Bled Cream Cake while overlooking the stunning lake & mountain views.

🔹Enjoy your last night in your hotel in Lake Bled.

Lake Bohinj

Day 4: Bovec & Soca Valley

Bovec is a small town that serves as a base for exploring Soca Valley, known for its emerald green river. If accommodation is full in Bovec, you can also consider staying in Kobarid.

🔹Enjoy your last morning in Bled before hitting the road to Bovec.

🔹Drive through the Vrsic Pass to Bovec. This drive is an activity in itself because the mountain views are so beautiful.

🔹For lunch, visit one of the traditional mountain huts, such as Koča na Gozdu, located along the Vršič Pass. These huts serve hearty Slovenian dishes, perfect for refueling after a morning of exploration. Enjoy dishes like jota (bean and sauerkraut stew) or ričet (barley stew) while taking in the alpine scenery.

🔹Check into your hotel and go for an easy afternoon hike, if you have time. Here are 2 options to hike to nearby waterfalls:

  • Virje Waterfall: The trailhead is located near the village of Plužna, just a short drive from Bovec. The hike is relatively easy and takes about 30 minutes each way. The picturesque waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery, is a perfect spot for a refreshing dip or simply to relax and enjoy the natural beauty.
  • Boka Waterfall: one of the most impressive waterfalls in Slovenia, with a height of over 100 meters. The trailhead is located just a few kilometers from Bovec, and the hike to the viewpoint is about 30 minutes each way.

🔹Enjoy local cuisine for dinner, including the famous Soca trout.

🔹Stay overnight in the town of Bovec or, if you can’t find accommodation there, try Kobarid.

Where To Stay in Bovec

📍Hotel Dobra Vila Bovec: This charming boutique hotel is close to town center with knowledgable staff to help you get the most out of your stay in Bovec.

📍Hotel Soča: The idyllic retreat is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with panoramic views of the mountains and river.

📍Adrenaline Check Camping: If you’re looking for a unique and adventurous stay, check out this glamping spot with cool wooden huts and rave reviews from their guests. No need for a tent or your own camping supplies as they have furnished huts and platform tents. Bathrooms are in shared facilities but they are modern and clean, for a comfortable stay.

Day 5: Bovec & Soca Valley

Spend your day exploring nearby. There’s a ton of options for adventure activities, depending on your interests. Take your pick of the below:

🔹You can go white-water rafting on this half day excursion with guide. They provide all the equipment and familiarize you with your gear. You don’t need rafting experience but you do need to know how to swim.

🔹Spend the afternoon kayaking on the beautiful Soca River. It’s a 2.5 hour excursion in total. Wear a swimsuit because they stop for swimming and jumping in the emerald pools.

🔹For a full day adventure of both water and air, spend the morning rafting and then the afternoon zip-lining. Check out: Soča Rafting and Europe’s Longest Zipline Adventure.

🔹If you like a more physical outdoor activity, try this Half-Day Canyoning Tour in Soča Valley

Day 6: Bovec to Ljubljana

This might be a bit controversial, but I think you can skip the capital city of Ljubljana if you’re more into nature than city sights. So you can either spend another day exploring Soca Valley and drive to the airport before your flight on Day 7 OR head to Ljubljana on Day 6 and explore the city for a day before departing.

🔹Drive about 2 – 2.5 hours to Ljubljana.

🔹Take a walking tour of Ljubljana or sight see on your own.

🔹Alternatively, if you’re a foodie, a cool way to learn more the history and culture is a Slovenian Cuisine Walking Tour with Tastings.

🔹If you opt to sightsee on your own be sure to start with a visit to Ljubljana Castle. Take the funicular from Krekov Trg to Ljubljana Castle. Explore the castle’s museum, climb the watchtower for panoramic views, and stroll through the castle grounds.

🔹After descending from the castle, wander through the cobble stone streets of the Old Town. Visit the Town Hall and Robba Fountain in Mestni Trg.

🔹Cross the iconic Triple Bridge, designed by renowned architect Jože Plečnik.

🔹Visit Prešeren Square, the city’s central square named after Slovenia’s greatest poet, France Prešeren.

🔹After dinner, explore Ljubljana’s vibrant nightlife. Head to Metelkova Mesto, an alternative cultural center with bars, clubs, and live music. For a more laid-back evening, visit one of the many riverside bars and enjoy a drink with a view.

Where to Stay in Ljubljana

📍 Bloom Hotel: It’s central location makes it a perfect base for exploring Ljubljana.

📍 City Hotel Ljubljana: Prime location near Old Town.

📍 Urban Boutique Hotel: Located just a short walk from Ljubljana’s top sights, it offers easy access to the city’s best dining and shopping options.

📍 Hotel Heritage: In the heart of Old Town, this hotel has modern rooms in a beautifully restored building.

Day 7: Ljubljana

If you have time before your flight, check out more of the city before driving the 45 minutes to the airport.

Slovenia Itinerary: 10 Days

🔹If you have more than one week, you should extend your stay in Bovec by 1 night and continue to explore Soca Valley. Try one of the activities you didn’t have time for yet:

Day 7: Drive to Piran with stop at Predjama Castle

🔹Start your day early to drive to Piran, a picturesque coastal town. You can do this drive in 2 hours or take a small detour and add an hour to visit Predjama Castle.

🔹Drive 2 hours to get to Predjama Castle, a very unique castle that is built directly into the Postojna Caves. Spend about an hour touring the castle, before driving the last hour to Piran.

🔹Begin your exploration of Piran at Tartini Square, the heart of Piran. Admire the statue of Giuseppe Tartini, the famous violinist and composer born in Piran. The square is surrounded by beautiful Venetian-style buildings, including the historic Tartini House and the Venetian House.

🔹St. George’s Parish Church: Walk up the hill to St. George’s Parish Church. The church offers stunning views of Piran and the Adriatic Sea. Explore the church’s interior and climb the bell tower for a panoramic view of the town and coastline.

🔹Check out the Piran Town Walls. A short walk from St. George’s Church, the walls provide a fantastic viewpoint over the red rooftops of Piran and the sea beyond.

🔹Enjoy fresh seafood at a seaside restaurant

🔹After dinner, head to the Punta lighthouse area to watch the sunset.

Where To Stay in Piran

📍Art Hotel Tartini: Boutique hotel in the heart of Piran

Day 10: Ljubljana

🔹Start your day with a delicious breakfast at Le Petit Café, a cozy spot offering French-inspired breakfast dishes and excellent coffee.

🔹Finish any sightseeing you didn’t get to on your first day in the city.

🔹Departure from LJU.

Slovenia Trip Planning Map

Here’s a map with top recommendations for places to visit, points of interest, and where to stay during your Slovenia itinerary.

How To Get Around Slovenia

🚗 Car: I highly recommend renting and driving your own car around Slovenia if you plan on venturing beyond Ljubljana and Lake Bled. If those are your only 2 stops, you can easily handle those places with public transportation, but otherwise it’s definitely worth renting a car to explore on your own timeline and venture into nature.

🚌 Bus: Buses are the most common form of public transport in Slovenia, connecting nearly every town and city.

There’s a handy FREE tourist bus in Lake Bled that runs in July and August. So you can see the nearby sights without contributing to traffic in the small town roads.

If you are looking to travel between Slovenia and other nearby European countries, Flix Bus is your best bet.

🚆 Train: Slovenia’s train network, operated by Slovenske železnice (Slovenian Railways), is another reliable option, especially for long-distance travel. Purchase tickets online, at stations, or via mobile apps. Discounts are available for children, students, and seniors.

Main Routes: Major routes include Ljubljana to Maribor, Koper, and Bled.

  • Lake Bled: From Ljubljana, take a scenic train ride to Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most iconic destinations. The train journey takes about an hour.
  • Piran: For a taste of the Adriatic coast, take a train to Koper and then a short bus ride to the coastal town of Piran. The journey from Ljubljana to Koper takes about two hours.

🚲 Biking: Cycling is a popular and eco-friendly way to explore Slovenia. Bike rentals are available in cities like Ljubljana and tourist areas such as Bled and Bohinj.

Slovenia Trip Planning FAQs

Here’s some additional helpful information as you plan your trip to Slovenia.

Is Slovenia worth visiting?

Yes, Slovenia is 100% worth visiting. The natural beauty and hospitality Slovenia has to offer with its outdoor adventures, charming small towns, delicious local food & wine is unmissable.

While Slovenia might not be as popular among global tourists as many other European destinations – it should be! I’m sure tourism in this beautiful country will only increase so go now before it gets as crazy as Italy and Croatia have become.

When is the best time to visit Slovenia?

Shoulder season in the spring (March-May) and fall (September – November) is the best time to visit Slovenia to enjoy the great outdoors without the summer crowds.

Slovenia’s peak tourist season is the summer months of June, July, and August when the weather is warm and often sunny, ideal for swimming, hiking, and other outdoor adventures. Longer days mean more time to explore but expect more crowds and higher prices for accommodations.

Winter months see fewer tourists, allowing for a more tranquil experience. Cold weather and snowfall may limit some outdoor activities, but it’s perfect for winter sports and cozy indoor experiences (like relaxing in thermal spas). You can go skiing in Kranjska Gora and Vogel, or check out winter festivals and Christmas markets in Ljubljana.

Is it better to stay in Ljubljana or Bled?

I recommend staying in Bled. You can explore the charming lake town itself as well as nearby places like Bohinj and Triglav National Park. Ljubljana is a nice city, but in my opinion the beauty of Slovenia lies in its spectacular outdoors. The breathtaking beauty in the nature of places like Triglav National Park, Vintgar Gorge, and Soca Valley are places not to be missed.

Slovenia Itinerary: 7 Days, 10 Days, 2 Weeks Trip Planning

These itineraries offer nature, culture, adventure, and relaxation, showcasing the best of Slovenia’s diverse landscapes and attractions. Whether you are hiking in the Julian Alps, exploring historic castles, or savoring local wines, your journey through Slovenia promises to be an epic adventure.
