How To Get To The Taj Mahal
The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, which is about 250 kms or 155 miles from Delhi in India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh.
🚆 Train from Delhi: A train from Delhi is a quick, convenient and hassle free option to get to Agra from Delhi. There are over a 100 trains that connect the two cities daily ranging from 1h30m to 3h30m of travel time.
Recommended trains on the route would be the Shatabdi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express or the Vande Bharat Express. The Vande Bharat trains are superfast, high end trains that have been launched over the past 5 years or so in India. These trains are the fastest and have easy availability as they are short distance trains. You can book your tickets here.
If you’re opting for a train other than the above, the trains will have sleeper coaches rather than chair cars and are long distance trains that pass via Agra. So, it would be recommended for you to book an AC two tier or first class ticket if you choose one of these trains.
🚗 Drive from Delhi: Another more flexible and comfortable option is to drive. The Yamuna Expressway, which is one of the oldest and most well maintained expressways in the country connects Delhi and Agra. It takes about 3.5 hours and tolls cost about ₹105 one way and ₹155 for a return journey.

Agra itself has a small airport, but you’d need to connect through Lucknow, if you’re flying from Delhi. There is one direct flight from Mumbai. Gwalior, about 120 kms or 2 hours away from Agra, is the closest airfield with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai.
Given the proximity of Agra from Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur, trains or driving is the recommended mode of travel for your visit to the Taj Mahal.
Best Time To Visit The Taj Mahal
While there is no bad day to see the Taj, you ideally want it to be a clear day to be able to see the Taj reflected in the garden fountains.
Additionally, something to consider is the temperature during the day. Agra has dry, hot summers with temperatures reaching 48C or 120F through March to June, making the afternoons especially hot. The monsoon months between June to September and the winter months between November to February are much cooler with winter temperatures reaching close to freezing. But you should note that the winter brings heavy smog which can cause travel disruptions and poor visibility.
The Taj is best seen in the early morning, misty glow of sunrise. However, it is also the most crowded during that time. You can also usually catch the sunset on most days at the Taj since it closes at 7pm.
✨ Pro Tip: Watch the sunset from Mehtab Bagh, a garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna river, open to visitors until 9pm. Head there for a different perspective of the Taj.
Another unique way of witnessing the Taj is in the moonlight. The monument is open between 8:30pm to 12:30am two days before, on and two days after a full moon (for a total of five days). To control the crowds, only 8 batches of 50 people are allowed in at a time so tickets are limited. You also aren’t allowed inside the monument at night.

A tour guide is helpful to understand the history and the story of the Taj. However, you do not absolutely need a guide.
Licensed guides are easily available at the entrance of the Taj and usually cost around $20. You can also book a guide tour on GetYourGuide or Viator or TripAdvisor – just be sure that they’re government approved.

For a special nighttime visit check the calendar for the full moon. The monument is open from 8:30pm to 12:30am two days before, on, and two days after a full moon. Note: you are not allowed inside the monument on the full moon nights, you just get let in the complex to admire the Taj Mahal from the outside in the moonlight.
Where do I buy tickets for the Taj Mahal?
Ticket counters are available on the Eastern and Western entrances of the Taj complex, and are open between one hour before sunrise and 45 minutes before sunset. Due to the crowds at the Taj, especially at sunrise, it would be recommended to buy tickets online here. If you book a tour, check to see if tickets are included (they usually are).
