Why The Taj Mahal Is Worth Visiting & Important Info For Your Visit In 2025

Are you considering a visit to the Taj Mahal for your India Itinerary? Here’s what you need to know.

Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world, a spectacular 17th Century mausoleum and a must see for any traveler. Just be sure you don’t end up there on a Friday, as the Taj is closed to visitors on Fridays due to weekly prayers. The western section of the main mausoleum and the gardens also serve as an active mosque on Fridays.

A visit to the Taj Mahal is often included in traveler’s first trips to India as part of the famous Golden Triangle route that takes you from Delhi to Agra to Jaipur. But there are plenty of different itinerary options for your first trip to India and trip planning that goes beyond the golden triangle to include beautiful destinations like Kerala in the South of India.

Quick Answer: Is The Taj Mahal Worth Visiting?

Yes, if you are a hopeless romantic! Yes, if you’re a traveler who is into history! Yes, if you like to see pretty places! Yes, if you also want to see other historical spots that Agra is also littered with!

How To Get To The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, which is about 250 kms or 155 miles from Delhi in India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh.

🚆 Train from Delhi: A train from Delhi is a quick, convenient and hassle free option to get to Agra from Delhi. There are over a 100 trains that connect the two cities daily ranging from 1h30m to 3h30m of travel time.

Recommended trains on the route would be the Shatabdi Express, Jan Shatabdi Express or the Vande Bharat Express. The Vande Bharat trains are superfast, high end trains that have been launched over the past 5 years or so in India. These trains are the fastest and have easy availability as they are short distance trains. You can book your tickets here.

If you’re opting for a train other than the above, the trains will have sleeper coaches rather than chair cars and are long distance trains that pass via Agra. So, it would be recommended for you to book an AC two tier or first class ticket if you choose one of these trains.

🚗 Drive from Delhi: Another more flexible and comfortable option is to drive. The Yamuna Expressway, which is one of the oldest and most well maintained expressways in the country connects Delhi and Agra. It takes about 3.5 hours and tolls cost about ₹105 one way and ₹155 for a return journey.

What is the closest airport to the Taj Mahal?

Agra itself has a small airport, but you’d need to connect through Lucknow, if you’re flying from Delhi. There is one direct flight from Mumbai. Gwalior, about 120 kms or 2 hours away from Agra, is the closest airfield with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai.

Given the proximity of Agra from Delhi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jaipur, trains or driving is the recommended mode of travel for your visit to the Taj Mahal.

Best Time To Visit The Taj Mahal

While there is no bad day to see the Taj, you ideally want it to be a clear day to be able to see the Taj reflected in the garden fountains.

Additionally, something to consider is the temperature during the day. Agra has dry, hot summers with temperatures reaching 48C or 120F  through March to June, making the afternoons especially hot. The monsoon months between June to September and the winter months between November to February are much cooler with winter temperatures reaching close to freezing. But you should note that the winter brings heavy smog which can cause travel disruptions and poor visibility.

The Taj is best seen in the early morning, misty glow of sunrise. However, it is also the most crowded during that time. You can also usually catch the sunset on most days at the Taj since it closes at 7pm.

Pro Tip: Watch the sunset from Mehtab Bagh, a garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna river, open to visitors until 9pm. Head there for a different perspective of the Taj.

Another unique way of witnessing the Taj is in the moonlight. The monument is open between 8:30pm to 12:30am two days before, on and two days after a full moon (for a total of five days). To control the crowds, only 8 batches of 50 people are allowed in at a time so tickets are limited. You also aren’t allowed inside the monument at night.

Best Tours Of The Taj Mahal

Here are some top tours of the Taj Mahal depending on if you are planning a daytrip to Agra or are already in Agra and just want a guide for your Taj Mahal visit.

If you are taking a daytrip from Delhi: All Inclusive Day Trip to Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Baby Taj from Delhi by Car

If you are already in Agra: Skip-the-Line Taj Mahal & Agra Fort Private Tour

If you are taking a daytrip from Jaipur, there’s a lot to keep in mind, but here’s my recommendation for a tour: Private Taj Mahal Tour from Jaipur by Car

Do I need a tour to see the Taj Mahal?

A tour guide is helpful to understand the history and the story of the Taj. However, you do not absolutely need a guide.

Licensed guides are easily available at the entrance of the Taj and usually cost around $20. You can also book a guide tour on GetYourGuide or Viator or TripAdvisor – just be sure that they’re government approved.

There are many tours in Agra that offer visits to the Taj and other spectacular monuments around, like Fatehpur Sikri, Agra Fort and Akbar’s Tomb.

Visiting The Taj Mahal FAQs

Helpful information for planning your visit to the Taj Mahal.

When is the Taj Mahal open?

The Taj Mahal is open everyday except Fridays between 6am and 7pm.

For a special nighttime visit check the calendar for the full moon. The monument is open from 8:30pm to 12:30am two days before, on, and two days after a full moon. Note: you are not allowed inside the monument on the full moon nights, you just get let in the complex to admire the Taj Mahal from the outside in the moonlight.

Where do I buy tickets for the Taj Mahal?

Ticket counters are available on the Eastern and Western entrances of the Taj complex, and are open between one hour before sunrise and 45 minutes before sunset. Due to the crowds at the Taj, especially at sunrise, it would be recommended to buy tickets online here. If you book a tour, check to see if tickets are included (they usually are).

Is there a dress code for the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal does not enforce any dress code. However, keep in mind that the Taj is a religious building and serves as a mosque on Fridays. Thus, it would be respectful to dress modestly while visiting the Taj.

I wore a long dress that covered my knees but it had spaghetti straps that showed my shoulders. It wasn’t a problem, but everyone else had covered shoulders so I’d recommend short sleeve dresses.

Why do people visit the Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal is widely regarded as the most exceptional example of Islamic architecture in the subcontinent, incorporating exquisite symmetry in its construction along with a diversity in shapes, symbols and calligraphy.

The ivory marble architectural masterpiece blends Indo-Islamic architecture with Mughal architecture. On the banks of the Yamuna river, it is a sight to behold, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Why was the Taj Mahal built?

In addition to being an architectural marvel, the Taj Mahal is often considered as the most timeless symbol of love. The Mughal Emperor Shahjahan built the Taj as a tomb for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, commissioned upon her death in 1631.

Can you go inside the Taj Mahal?

Yes, you can go inside the Taj Mahal but you need to buy a ticket to both the mausoleum and the gardens to be able to go inside.

How long did it take to build the Taj Mahal?

It took about 20 years (1631 – 1653) for the Taj Mahal to be built at a cost of about $80M in today’s money, with the mausoleum completed in 1648 with the gardens and other buildings completed five years later.

Things To Do In Agra

Obviously #1 is to visit the Taj Mahal, but here are some more options for things to do on your trip to Agra

Visit the Taj Mahal

No visit to Agra is complete without seeing the Taj Mahal. This UNESCO World Heritage site, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, is a symbol of eternal love and one of the most photographed buildings in the world.

Explore Agra Fort

Just 2.5 kilometers from the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is another UNESCO World Heritage site that deserves attention. This red sandstone fortress, also built by Emperor Akbar, was the main residence of the Mughal emperors. Wander through its palaces, gardens, and halls, and don’t miss the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audiences) and the Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audiences).

Visit Mehtab Bagh

Located across the Yamuna River, Mehtab Bagh is a garden complex that offers a serene view of the Taj Mahal from a distance. This less crowded spot is ideal for capturing the Taj Mahal at sunset. The reflection of the monument in the Yamuna River, framed by lush greenery, makes for a picture-perfect moment. It’s also a great place for a quiet evening stroll.

Enjoy a meal with a view of the Taj Mahal

Indulge in the city’s famous Mughlai cuisine. Must-try dishes include biryani, kebabs, and the famous Agra petha, a sweet made from ash gourd. There are plenty of local eateries where you can savor these delicacies, but for a truly special experience, combine your meal with a view of the Taj Mahal.

Here are my top recommendations for where to eat with Taj views:

🔹Saniya Palace Hotel Rooftop Restaurant: Located close to the Taj Mahal’s south gate, Saniya Palace offers a casual dining experience with an unbeatable view of the monument. The menu features a variety of Indian, Chinese, and Continental dishes, but the real highlight is the stunning view, especially at sunset. This is a great spot for a relaxed meal or a cup of chai as you watch the changing colors of the Taj Mahal.

🔹Esphahan at The Oberoi Amarvilas: For a more luxurious experience, The Oberoi Amarvilas is unparalleled. This 5-star hotel boasts a fine dining restaurant, Esphahan, where you can enjoy traditional Indian cuisine in an elegant setting. The restaurant’s terrace offers a direct view of the Taj Mahal, making it perfect for a romantic dinner or a special occasion. While it comes with a higher price tag, the experience is worth every penny.

🔹Shanti Lodge Rooftop Restaurant: A more budget-friendly option, Shanti Lodge offers a panoramic view of the Taj Mahal from its rooftop terrace. The restaurant serves a mix of Indian and Continental dishes, and while the food is simple, the view is spectacular. It’s a popular spot among backpackers and budget travelers, offering a laid-back vibe and great photo opportunities.

🔹Taj Terrace at Tajview – IHCL SeleQtions: offers a modern Indian menu and an incredible view of the Taj Mahal. This restaurant is part of the Tajview Hotel and is known for its excellent service and beautifully presented dishes.

Visit the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah

Often referred to as the “Baby Taj,” the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah is a beautiful mausoleum that predates the Taj Mahal. Built by Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir, in memory of her father, this monument is considered a draft of the Taj Mahal. Its intricate marble inlay work and delicate architecture make it a must-see, especially for those interested in Mughal history.

Shop at Kinari Bazaar

For a taste of Agra’s local life, head to Kinari Bazaar, one of the city’s oldest markets. This bustling market is a treasure trove of traditional handicrafts, jewelry, textiles, and spices. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or simply want to soak in the vibrant atmosphere, Kinari Bazaar is the place to be. Don’t forget to bargain – it’s all part of the experience!

Visit Fatehpur Sikri

Just an hour’s drive from Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is another UNESCO World Heritage site that should be on your itinerary. This abandoned city, built by Emperor Akbar, was once the capital of the Mughal Empire. Today, it stands as a well-preserved ghost town, with stunning examples of Mughal architecture, including the Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, and Panch Mahal.

Where To Stay When Visiting The Taj Mahal

There’s no shortage of hotel options in Agra. Here are few recommendations for the best places to stay in Agra.

📍Tajview Agra IHCL Selections: This mid-range boutique hotel has rooms that offer views of the Taj Mahal (be sure to book a room with a view). My friends and I stayed here for 2 nights on my trip to Agra and had a wonderful stay. We enjoyed drinks and snacks down by the pool and had great service our entire stay.

📍ITC Mughal, Agra: excellent option for luxury travelers, which is part of the Luxury Collection by Marriott. This sprawling resort is set amidst 35 acres of lush gardens and offers a blend of contemporary comfort and Mughal architecture. The Royal Mughal Suite, with its private terrace and Jacuzzi, is particularly popular among guests looking for an indulgent stay. While the Taj Mahal is a short drive away, the hotel’s serene environment makes it a perfect retreat after a day of sightseeing.

📍Oberoi Amarvilas Agra: the most luxurious hotel in Agra. Located just 600 meters from the Taj Mahal, this 5-star property boasts breathtaking views of the monument from most rooms and public spaces. The hotel is designed in the style of a Mughal palace, with terraced lawns, fountains, and reflection pools that create an ambiance of royal elegance. Guests can enjoy fine dining at the hotel’s restaurant, Esphahan, relax at the spa, or take a dip in the beautiful outdoor pool.

📍Fairfield by Marriot, Agra: The least expensive of the options I have listed here, but still offers a very pleasant stay. Some rooms have views of the Taj Mahal as well. If you’re looking for nice hotel and good value for your money in a mid-range hotel, check availability here.

📍Grand Mercure Agra – An Accor Brand: Another solid mid-range option for the everyday traveler, located just 1.5 kilometers from the Taj Mahal. Guests can also enjoy the hotel’s rooftop pool, fitness center, and multiple dining options. The rooftop restaurant, Sky Grill, offers a relaxed dining experience with views of the Taj Mahal.

TLDR: Is The Taj Mahal Worth Visiting?

The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful buildings that exist on the planet. Its proximity to Delhi and many other large cities in North and Central India makes it an easy destination to fit into your India itinerary.

Additionally, Agra has many other historical monuments like Fatehpur Sikri that are not as famous but spectacular in their own right, making it perfect for a day or two. Thus, the Taj Mahal is a must see for anyone traveling to India, especially if it’s your first time in the country.
