I have been to Goa on three separate trips: in October 2017, February 2019, and March 2022. Goa is very much an evolving destination. As it grows in popularity some areas have been very saturated with tourism and therefore it makes sense to venture further out to find more relaxing beach spots.
North Goa vs. South Goa: What’s the Difference?
Consider what you’re looking for on your trip; generally speaking, you should choose North Goa for nightlife and adventure, and South Goa for relaxation and quiet beaches.
Goa is essentially is a collection of villages each with its own beach and with Panjim as the capital. Depending on what you’re looking for, Goa has a village for everything. The further north or south you go, the quieter the villages get.
About North Goa
North Goa is often the go-to for tourists seeking a lively holiday. Known for its beaches, lively markets, and nightlife, it’s ideal for those looking for excitement and entertainment. With the newly opened MOPA international airport in North Goa, this area has become very easily accessible now.
When people refer to ‘Old Goa’ they are normally referring to a handful of villages around Baga in North Goa.
The Areas of North Goa
These areas are centered around villages and/or beaches that have sprawled out to become bustling areas in North Goa.
Calangute & Baga
These neighboring beaches are the epicenter of North Goa’s vibrancy. The area is packed with a variety of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to budget-friendly guesthouses.
A few restaurants and shacks in the area worth checking out are: Brittos, Antony’s, Infantaria, Cavala.

Anjuna

The rocky beach, with its laid-back vibe, attracts a mix of international tourists and long-term travelers. Anjuna’s nightlife is buzzing, with iconic venues like Curlies, which is the oldest and most famous shack in the area.
My personal favorite restaurant I ate at here was Pisco by the Beach, a nice bright airy restaurant right on the water.

Candolim offers a more relaxed vibe with its range of beachfront restaurants and bars. These neighborhoods are ideal for travelers looking for a luxurious and tranquil beach experience.

Arambol Beach is perfect for long walks, and the nearby Sweet Water Lake is a natural freshwater lagoon, ideal for a serene swim. The area also hosts various workshops on alternative therapies and arts, attracting a global community.

Morjim has a unique cultural vibe. It’s also known as “Little Russia” due to the large Russian ex-pat community.
For dining, Morjim offers a variety of restaurants and bars that cater to diverse tastes. La Plage is highly recommended for its French cuisine and chic decor, providing a sophisticated dining experience. For those craving Italian, Jardin d’Ulysse offers a cozy ambiance and authentic dishes. The Rice Mill is a nice cafe, where you can enjoy some live music.

Vagator, located in North Goa, offers a unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant nightlife, making it a popular choice among travelers. When it comes to dining, Thalassa, a Greek taverna-style restaurant, is not only famous for its authentic Mediterranean cuisine but also for its stunning sunset views, making it a must-visit.
Be sure to make reservations at Olive Vagator for a nice meal and superb ambience because when I tried to go they had no availability.
The nightlife and live music scene in Vagator are among the best in Goa. Hill Top, an iconic venue, is renowned for its trance parties and international DJ sets, particularly during the tourist season and special festivals like New Year’s Eve.
Another hotspot is Chronicle, a multi-level venue known for its techno parties and spectacular views of the Arabian Sea. For a more relaxed evening, the Mango Tree offers a laid-back vibe with good music, great food, and a wide selection of drinks.

October and March are considered the shoulder months, offering a balance between the peak and off-peak seasons. The weather remains pleasant, although March starts getting warmer.
The monsoon season runs June to September. Heavy rains are common, which can restrict beach activities and outdoor exploration so it’s not a time that everyone will enjoy. The beaches and streets are less crowded so accommodations and other tourist services may offer significant discounts.
