Masque Mumbai: Review of India’s Best Restaurant

Masque was by far my favorite restaurant experience in Mumbai. I highly recommend making a reservation there, whether you are visiting or local.

If you’re looking for a nice meal out but want something less expensive than Masque, I recommend checking out Americano or The Table, which are two of the best restaurants in South Mumbai in addition to Masque.

I’d easily give five out of five stars to Masque. Each course is served to you with an explanation of the ingredients and the inspiration behind the dish. I was impressed with everything that was served to us. Every bite is full of flavor and intention. The service was impeccable; the wait staff were delighted to chat with us and answer any questions we had about the food.

What is the menu at Masque Mumbai?

Part of the excitement of the meal is the surprise of the menu. It is updated seasonally depending on what ingredients are sourced that time of year and, of course, the chef’s inspiration for the moment.

I would describe the style of food served at Masque as traditional Indian food with an elevated and innovative twist. They pull in ingredients sourced from around the world to combine with Indian cuisine, which creates a storytelling experience for each course. As each course is presented, the waiter will provide an explanation of the dish and where its inspiration came from.

As you can see from the photos of the food throughout this review, not only was each course delicious, but impeccably presented.

Do I need to make a reservation at Masque Mumbai?

Yes, reservations are required at Masque. Both times I ate there I booked in advance and the tables were all filled. We tried to make a last minute reservation one time and unfortunately it was booked up. You can call, email, or WhatsApp the restaurant to make reservations, more info here.

Is Masque vegetarian?

The menu includes vegetarian, meat and seafood courses. But you can inform the restaurant ahead of time if someone in your party is vegetarian and they are happy to accommodate. They will substitute vegetarian ingredients in place of the meat or fish. Speaking from experience, my friend is vegetarian and the dishes she was served were just appetizing, if not more so!

They will also tailor the menu for any allergies or other preferences.

How many courses are served at Masque Mumbai?

Masque serves a mouthwatering 10 course meal. Be prepared for a couple bonus bites as a palate cleanser or amuse bouche or dessert. Each course is presented by the waiter with an explanation of the dish, its ingredients and how they make the dish meaningful. The ingredients are often utilized in a unique way or put a spin on a traditional dish.

Spoiler alert: they also invite you into the kitchen to enjoy one of the courses directly with the chef.

Do they serve cocktails at Masque?

Yes, they serve cocktails at Masque. They even have wine or cocktail pairings with four drinks that are served to match the dishes.

What is Masque’s ranking?

Amongst other honors, Masque was awarded the impressive title of “The Best Restaurant in India” in 2023 by The World’s Best 50 Restaurants.

Is Masque expensive?

Yes, Masque is on the more expensive side of restaurants in Mumbai. However, for a meal with so many courses and the distinctive honor of India’s Best Restaurant, the price is not all that much.

It’s a set price of Rs. 4500 for the 10 course meal. Then you’ll need to budget for drinks if you order cocktails or their non-alcoholic drink pairing. Plus, don’t forget about the service charge and tax which will be added to the bill.

The flavorful 10 course meal, served in a wonderfully modern ambience in a reimagined former textile mill, will leave you more than satisfied. Eating at Masque is more than a meal, it’s an experience!
